Dear Chief Minister Jeyalalitha,

We at Tamils for Obama, on behalf of all North American diaspora Tamils, wish to congratulate you on your election victory announced on May 13. We think the voters of Tamil Nadu have made a wise choice.

We loved you in the past for a few of the brave and outspoken things that you did.  You urged the Indian government to intervene and stop the war in Sri Lanka. This was when the Singhalese government was massacring Tamils in the no-fire zone. You called for food and medicine to be sent to the starving and diseased internal refugees in Vanni. You promised that if or when you were elected you would push for Tamil sovereignty in a country in the island of Sri Lanka to be called Tamil Eelam.

We admire you now for three things you have done. First, you have cleaned up the stain of the corrupt and embarrassing DMK band that ruled Tamil Nadu, a group that could have acted to compel the Indian government to stop the massacres in Sri Lanka but did nothing. They shamed Tamils everywhere, even in North America. Second, you pressed the Indian government to support the UN panel report that named Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa for "war crimes and genocide" after the world body's report on civilian casualties during the Sri Lankan civil war. Third, you called for economic sanctions against Sri Lanka to get Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa to stand trial for these war crimes and genocide, using an economic blockade against the recalcitrant island nation if necessary.

We wish you well in your new position as chief minister of Tamil Nadu, and we look forward to seeing you act on the admirable tasks you mentioned for the last two years.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Tamils for Obama
